Crawling

Crawling

Individually, we emerge
from a web of lives
entwined, complicated
with our own untried
dreams and naïve hopes.

Crawling across threads
taut with the strength of
habit and history, we learn
where not to go.

We feel safe until
the bridges, just crossed,
burn behind us, set fire
by the hands we trusted.

We learn, then,
to cast our own
lifelines, praying
they will hold.

Practical Spirituality

I see you, my sister, my brother – not just what covers your bones and comes from your lips – I see the soul that shines from your eyes, I feel the heart that beats inside you.

I respect and love you for what you are – the beautiful and the terrible, the love and fear.

In this moment we come to each other as strangers, though we are not strangers.

In this moment, what you feel and desire, think and do effects me, which makes you the most important person in the world to me.

In this moment, healing flows from the power of my being, as it flows from the power of your being.

Human community begins with self and the other. This is practical spirituality: one-to-one love and respect, a balm to pain and suffering.

A Dream Had Me

Somewhere between
the stars (in my
eyes), a dream
had me saving
lucky pennies
till I was rich.

I’m long down
that glittering
road, sworn to
noble purpose;
good friends with
hope and despair.

Folks rich with
the stuff of
dreams gave back
a thousandfold,
love and joy
free for taking.

I’m holding on
to this family;
our tears and
laughter the web
that catches
each fallen star.

Treasure at Hand

The human soul possesses four gifts: Pure love, longing, free choice, and wisdom. When employed in perfect balance, one with the other, these gifts guide us to serve the highest good in ourselves and others.

While we long to love and be loved in return, love and longing must be balanced with wise choices. The still, small voice of wisdom makes a clear path through confusion and doubt. Make time to listen to the soul, seek these gifts that are freely ours. Begin the treasure hunt of your heart.

A live heart

I am alive. I breathe – one, two, three breaths. Surrounded, air nourishes my body.

My spirit lives because I love. I don’t have to think about what this means; love is the nourishment of my soul. Love is found everywhere – it is in the very center of my being.

Help is always ready to be received. I keep my eyes open for little kindnesses – a smiling face, beauty, every one who reaches out to me. And if that one is no longer here, another will take her place – love will reach out again.

Within my heart I feel love flow back and forth, inward and outward. The heart opens its doors wide. Like the sun, love rises to meet me every day to give light – this light shines even through clouds.

Only a living, breathing heart can lift this heavy world on the wings of hope and faith. I have all I need for my spirit to live: nourishment of soul and mind, freedom, a sense of purpose – I pray that this will be for all people.

Gratitude lifts my heart to meet another day.
